Step 2: Candidates Apply

Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the requirements, you will complete your application online, unless you require accommodation due to disability. In this case, contact the hiring department to advise of the type of accommodation you require. It is important to understand the difference between screening and assessment and the requirements for each.

Screening is the process of reviewing a candidate’s application to determine if they meet the essential education and experience criteria as well as asset education and experience. Screening can be performed by the federal Public Service Resourcing System (PSRS) and by government personnel. Candidates are responsible for clearly demonstrating their qualifications in their application and online questionnaire, if applicable. Hiring departments are seeking

  • What – the title(s) of your position(s) held, including group and level
  • Where – the name(s) of the department(s) or organization(s) where you gained the experience
  • When – dates that show the length of time you spent in the position(s)
  • How - concrete examples demonstrating how you meet the essential and/or asset qualifications

Assessment is the process determining if, and to what degree, a candidate meets the essential and asset qualifications. Assessment methods may include interviews, written tests, reference checks, and/or simulations designed to assess candidates against the qualifications for the position. Hiring departments may conduct assessments for some criteria based on the application itself. If they do, they will be explicit about what is being assessed.? For example, “Your cover letter will be used to assess your ability to communicate effectively in writing.”

Pay special attention to the use of “and”, “or” and “such as”.

To enable screening, ensure that your cover letter, CV/resume, and responses to screening questions are complete and thorough.
